A wonderful addiction to this EPIC series...

A spectacular third book in the Lunar Chronicles that will have your head spinning in pure bliss! Filled with all the same fun characters from all the previous books, and some new and intriguing ones that bring a different kinda dynamic to the story, with a thickened plot and a world of trouble and drama, CRESS has lived up to all my expectations and some!

What a mind blowing ride CRESS took me on! I learned early on from book one not to underestimate Meyer's and her mad writing skills. But for some crazy reason I always do just that, and each book just gets better and better, surprising me with a more engaging read each time! This book was hypnotizing and absolutely addicting from the very first page. I could not put it down for nothing, and I loved all the new and exciting characters that were introduced and became a great addition to this fantastic series!

The characters were once again wonderful! Theirs so many main characters in this book that you would think it would be hard to follow, but surprisingly it's not. I found that all the characters and different POV's only developed the story more, making it complex and that much stronger. I really liked how in the beginning all the characters were together, and then slowly they all started getting separated from each other because of a different traumatic event that in my opinion only strengthened the story. And then you have all the different POV's from the characters in different places and your able to see what's going on all around the world.

I loved all the characters for different reasons. Cinder because the girl has been through much and is still determined to save the same people who once mocked her for her disability. And plus she's going to kick Queen Levana's a** when they finally face off in WINTER, I KNOW she is, (at least she better! ;) That b*tch Levana needs a taste of her own medicine. But I still love her as the wicked villain that she is that only makes this story that much more as awesome! Scarlet because she has this admirable strength that only multiplies tenfold when she feels threatened. And when the girl loves, she loves hard! I think she may even be my favorite of them all! I don't know though, I do LOVE Cinder and Iko too! Cress because the girl brings a new light to this book that this series never had. And she's sweet and innocent, yet she's not afraid to get her hands dirty even when her life's on the line for strangers. And Iko is soo funny and instantly likable. Being an android and having so much personality and sense of humanity that is full of life and a bubbly demeanor only strengthened the book and brought a fun tone to the story.

Okay, now for the boys. . .

Kai, ohhhhh, KAI is sooo swoony! He's Emperor, yet you wouldn't be able to tell if you didn't know who he was. He's down to earth and genuinely cares about people. He's also extremely hot but doesn't think he's better then anyone, and is willing to put himself last to save is country. Wolf because he's totally bada*s on the outside, yet when he's with Scarlet he's a big softy that'll would walk to the end of the world for. He is definitely my kinda guy! ;) THORNE, ohhhh, Thorne! He's another favorite of mine! The boy is all sarcasm and hotness! I LOVE HIM!!! He's always making light of any situation, and can make you laugh when really you shouldn't. He also lives behind his jokes, trying to hide the real him that is loyal and caring, and brave even when he doesn't want to see it!!

So there you have it, just a quick little bit of why I love each and every one of our main characters. But theirs still so many more admirable reasons of why their all so awesome. And though Cinder is at the forefront of them all, they're all still equally important to the story for their own reasons. And I think Meyers did a wonderful job at creating each of them and developing just the right amount of characterization! I'm looking forward to officially meeting Winter, but from what I can gather, she may be a little cuckoo for cocoa puffs, but is still the fairest of them all! ;)

THE PLOT:

CINDER:

Still on the run from both Earth and Luna, Cinder and her group of rebels are barley evading authorities as they prepare to face off with Levana and restore Cinder, the rightful heir to the Lunar throne. But their journey has been tedious and nothing short of deadly, and if they don't succeed in their mission, not only will they be doomed, but also all of Earth and Luna.

CRESS:

Cress has daydreamed about the day her prince charming would rescue her from the tower and slay the evil monster, the day has finally arrived...

Born a shell with no Lunar gift, and considered unworthy to live in society with the rest of her fellow Lunars, Cress, like all other shells are taken at birth and immediately executed in order to rid the moon of the abomination they bring when born. But, the secret that not many Lunars know, is that they're not really executed when taken from their parents. The truth is their blood is special, and harvested for the cure it holds for the rampant letumosis disease killing thousands of Earthens. They cannot be controlled by other Lunars, but they also have no mind controlling powers either. But Cress has a special talent far more worthy then just her blood, and is about to become just as deadly . . .

Cress is Queen Levana's best hacker, and she's been spying on Earth for far too long. Forced to do evil things for the queen, Cress has been imprisoned in her Satellite where she's cutoff from humanity and only has a mini version of herself for a companion. She has been secretly helping Cinder evade authorities from her seclusion in her Satellite, but Cress fears if she doesn't start producing results in "locating" Cinder soon, then she may find herself facing a punishment she won't make it out of alive. But how can she turn in the same people that could be her only hope for freedom?

SCARLET:

Scarlet is now carrying out her grandmothers last wishes by helping Cinder on her mission to save both the people of Earth and Luna by dethroning the evil tyrant Levana from the Lunar throne—thus saving earth from having a new evil Empress claiming their world for herself, and all her evil plans she has in store for them! Scarlet and their newly formed group of rebels have a plan, if only she can stay alive long enough to carry it out. . .

CRESS was an exceptional book that did a wonderful job with setting up the finale for the final installment in WINTER. I loved how this novel was evened out and weighed the chapters with the pace that made it all come together and fit just right. I especially thought CRESS went out with a bang, and was as solid as any ending could be. And I LOVED that Cinder and Kai FINALLY got to see each other again. Even if we only got a little time with them, it still set my heart aflame to have them back together again! I am so eager to start WINTER, yet hesitant to read it because I don't want it to be over just yet!

Overall, CRESS was a fantastic third installment that any Lunar fan would truly love! With a thickened plot and thrilling action, CRESS was tons of fun as sparks flew in this installment. I will forever love this series and will eagerly read anything Meyer's writes next! If your a HUGE Lunar fan then this is one installment you won't want to miss!

LOVE it! It just gets better and better!

I love fairy tales. I also love SciFi. Marissa Meyer does such an excellent job in putting these two together! It is amazing to me as well that in this third book of her Lunar Chronicles series that she also handles multiple points of view and story-lines so seamlessly without losing my interest or confusing me. This is storytelling at its best!

I don't know how she comes up with the back-stories for her characters that build these amazing plots, nor how she creatively takes a beloved fairy tale (Rapunzel) and creates this amazing story. I just know that she does it well. I was immediately drawn in to Cress's world, her joys, and her fears from the first page. None of the characters in this series are perfect, and Cress is no different. I would say, however, that all the characters are perfectly flawed and I wouldn't change a thing about them. They are all consistent and I felt they react as they should if they weren't just in a storybook world. I loved Cress! She is amazing! She isn't my favorite character. I think Cinder, Scarlet, and Thorne are all vying for that place, but I still love all of these characters. I can't say that I love the villains, which are Queen Lavana and Sybil, but they are very true to who they are and what they do.

I just have to note here that I am very happy with Thorne's place in the whole plot. I felt he was meant specifically for someone and now I know that he is and I am very happy about it. :) Prince Kai redeems himself to me in this book. I loved him in Cinder, not so much in Scarlet, and I am falling back in love with him in Cress. We also meet another leading man and a new leading lady that I'm sure will be much more present in the fourth book. I'm really looking forward to it!

The plot kept me turning the pages. Meyer doesn't let her characters off easy. She is actually pretty hard on all of them. They have a serious fight they have undertaken with serious decisions to be made that have major consequences. I'm glad that it hasn't been too easy, even though it was pretty difficult in spots. I was a little worried about what would happen and I'm glad that I'm happy with the way things are going. I'm really not sure what is going to unfold in the final book. I can figure out what needs to happen and probably what will happen, but I also know that it is going to be a tough journey for Cinder and her companions.

If you enjoy reading fairy tales (or very creative twists on them), or SciFi, then I would highly recommend reading Cress! The series just seems to get better and better. If there was a higher rating than 5, this book would get that for me.

In this third book of the lunar chronicles we get to know Cress.
She has been locked alone in a satellite most of her life where she has been forced to be queen Levana's personal hacker.
Cress has grown tired of being stuck out in space and horrified by all the awful things that Levana has done, that she has in some ways helped her do, so she reaches out to Cinder and her small crew for help.
But Cress' rescue is only the first thing that Cinder has to take care of.
Then there is also the royal wedding where Kai is supposed to marry the Lunar queen, whitch Cinder knows is a horrible idea since that would only clear the path for Levana to take over Earth.
Cinder can't just sit by any longer and watch Kai doom the people of Earth by making Levana not only the queen of Luna but also an empress on Earth.
She has finally made a decision, she will dethrone Leavana and become who she was meant to be even though being queen was never what she really wanted.

I really liked this book, there was a lot of action and we get even more additions to the already great cast of characters. Things are getting serious, the characters have some decisions to make and schemes to plot. I'm really excited for the last book, so far I have very much enjoyed the Lunar Chronicles and I hope that it's ending will not disappoint.

Could the Moorish Science Temple Of America Have Been A Forerunner To The Nation Of Islam?

Noble Drew Ali was born in 1886 in North Carolina. At some point, as a young adult, he made his way to Newark, NJ. He was a man very much interested in religion, so he and his group of male friends had numerous discussions on the topic, disagreeing about a lot of different things. Ali was naturally drawn to the religion of Islam. Thinking that it was the natural religion for Black people, he pushed the notion forward that people typically known as “Black” and “African-American” in the United States should be referred to as “Moors” or “Asiatics,” with both of the terms being used interchangeably. His group studied The Koran, stating that they were being true to it. Ali argued that he was one in a long line of Prophets of Allah, but not necessarily the last one. He also felt that Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey was also a Prophet and Ali eventually visited Garvey while Garvey was in prison, having what he said was a very fruitful discussion with Garvey. Noble Drew Ali felt that,

"Being that Prophets are thoughts of Allah manifested in the flesh, in order to clearly communicate the messages of Almighty God Allah, Prophets are raised amongst specific segments of society speaking the language of the people whom they were sent to save. This is to ensure that the messages of Allah are articulated unambiguously.” (pr. 15).

At some point, Noble Drew Ali made his way to Chicago, incorporating into his religious view ideas from Garvey's cultural nationalism, the idea that Asiatics or Moors are chosen people, who should build their own businesses and support one another. He made his group official in Chicago, naming it the “Moorish Science Temple Of America.” He re-wrote a version of The Koran and called it “The Holy Koran of the Moorish Science Temple of America,” stating that Allah inspired him to do so. Noble Drew Ali taught what he said are the 5 highest Divine principles of Islam, “Love, Truth, Peace, Freedom and Justice.” The group made it a point to adorn themselves in traditional clothing at official gatherings of the group. Somewhere in describing members of the Moorish Science Temple Of America, they referred to themselves as a “Nation,” a destined special people of Allah.
Starting with his one temple in Chicago, Noble Drew Ali fanned out over the country, seeking converts and starting other temples that spread The Word. At its peak, the group had temples in 15 states of the United States, mostly in larger cities, and this fact was highlighted at least one of their conventions.
The thing that makes Noble Drew Ali so noteworthy is the fact that he was the first person to have a significant Muslim and Islamic group in the major cities of America, beginning with his formation of his group in Chicago in the mid to late 1920's. Given their religious and cultural beliefs, with Islam as their bedrock, he and his group raise major Historical questions. One can easily see how either Elijah Muhammad or W.D. Fard, both of whom would become instrumental in the formation of the “The Nation Of Islam,” may have either been early associates of Noble Drew Ali, or to have even been members of the Moorish Science Temple of America, since the NOI would eventually follow the same process for establishing religious institutions all across America, with its religion of Islam, and by being highly influenced by the cultural nationalism of Marcus Garvey. I read this book as part of a personal project to get to know more about the background of Malcolm X, and though I can't officially tie Nobel Drew Ali to the eventual formation of The Nation Of Islam, it certainly would make sense that there is a tie. It simply would make sense. Although this is a very short book of only 120 pages, it is invaluable for giving one a great sense of the History and mission of Noble Drew Ali and the early roots of urban Islam in America, along with how Ali came to accomplish the things that he did. I would recommend the book for these reasons alone. It is a good resource.

"Prophet Noble Drew Ali: Saviour of Humanity" is by far the most factual book written on the life of Prophet Noble Drew Ali. I've read all the previous ones. Every assertion made in the book is supported by primary sources. Those derive from public sources such as The Chicago Defender, as well sources within the Moorish Science Temple of America, e.g., Moorish Guide newspaper articles published by Drew Ali himself, post cards, and elderly member interviews. Armed with said sources Azeem Hopkins-Bey, a life-long member of the MSTA has weaved together an outstanding narrative detailing the life,time and works of Noble Drew Ali. The sources are embedded within the pages. This work presents a living timeline whereby the reader is able to travel with the Prophet as he experiences highs and lows, successes and failures before ultimately hosting a National Convention of the Moorish Science Temple of America with representation from 15 different states in 1928. Also, the author offers a critical analysis of the teachings of Noble Drew, which is rarely done by prior writers attempting to write his story. The Moorish Divine National Movement founded by Noble Drew Ali is largely unknown in American society. The reader will complete this book wondering why s/he had not heard of Noble Drew Ali before as he taught true principles of universal brotherhood, civic responsibility, race pride and economic empowerment. I highly recommend this book!!!

YOU ARE A PURE GENIUS KIYOSAKI!

This book was absolutely wonderful! I thought Rich Dad Poor Dad was pretty good, because it taught me somethings I never knew and reminded me of where I do and do not want to be in the long term. Cashflow Quadrant abolishes the myths about investing and I loved how he seperated the Employees and Self Employed on the left side and the business owners and investors on the right side. I am starting to invest into some mutual funds, and plan to get educated to sell and invest in real estate. I know just about everyone in the world is described well in this book. For example, my grandfather is a self employed person and belives it is wrong to obtain any money through investments. My dad on the other hand thinks it is foolish to only rely on a job or being self employed. I just want a career and to have most of my money towards investments. Most of my co-workers that have gotten fired are in deep trouble because they never knew or took advantage of the information in this book. If they have investment money, then they wouldn't have to be worried about getting fired. Buy this book! If you don't, you will never be aware of investment opportunities, and will have no choice but to take orders your whole life. Remember, what you do with the paycheck in your hand is your choice. If you blow it all to consume, then you will be poor. If you take the paycheck and put some of it towards investments each time, then you will be getting out of the rat race quicker. But like Kiyosaki says "The choice is up to you"

Should Be Required Reading In School. Stop Kardashianing and Start Reading This Today!

Why doesn't every school in the USA school their kids with this book? While its just as valuable for adults, this book should be a required high school course for every student. Probably the most valuable lessons to learn about how to structure your life from day one so that you can get ahead and achieve the life you want, putting YOU in control. An easy read and great follow up to his original book Rich Dad Poor Dad, I can only say that the first half of my life would have been SO DIFFERENT if I had learned, understood and put these principles into practice. Get it for yourself. Get it for your kids. Get it for your grandkids. Save them so much wasted time and effort in life. His principles and teachings are easy to understand and life changing if applied. The sooner you start, the happier and more fee you will be in this life.

My Favorite of Kiyosaki's Books

I've read most of Kiyosaki's books, and this is my favorite.

When he explained his "Rich Dad's" Cashflow Quadrant about the four main different ways that people earn incomes, and the very substantial differences in how they think from each other, I really took a hard look at how I was earning an income.

I THOUGHT I was in business for myself, by providing a professional service. Even though I learned quickly and early that if I didn't actually PROVIDE the service, for whatever reason (like I might want to go on a vacation!) then I wasn't making ANY income at all. This book really got me to thinking about how people in the "B" or "Business" quadrant think, as opposed to my quadrant, the "S" or "Specialized" or "Service" quadrant. So I changed "quadrants."

In hindsight, some of this information seems fairly "intuitive." However, having someone spell it out in simple terms for me was very, very helpful.

Composed in medieval England by an unknown poet and set in what were (even then) the old days of King Arthur, the tale of Sir Gawain begins when a magical warrior with green skin and green hair interrupts the Christmas party at Camelot with a bizarre challenge: If a person here present, within these premises,/ is big or bold or red blooded enough/ to strike me one stroke and be struck in return in once year's time, says the knight, I shall give him as a gift this gigantic cleaver. Boar Hunts and Bedchambers

Also alliteration and a lot of it.

Simon Armitage has produced a contemporary translation of the noted 14th century Middle English poem. In so doing he has been faithful to the original work, while rendering it accessible and interesting to modern readers.

The action begins when the knights of King Arthur's Round Table are disturbed in their Christmas feasting by the arrival of a fearsome Green Knight who issues a remarkable challenge:

"if a person here present, within these premises,
is big or bold or red-blooded enough
to strike me one stroke and be struck in return,
I shall give him as a gift this gigantic cleaver
and the axe shall be his to handle as he likes.
I'll kneel, bare my neck, and take the first knock.
So who has the gall? The gumption? The guts?
Who'll spring from his seat and snatch this weapon?
I offer the axe - who'll have it as his own?
I'll afford him one free hit from which I won't flinch,
and promise that twelve months will pass in peace,
then claim,
the duty I deserve
in one year and one day.
Does no one have the nerve
to wager in this way?"

Gawain accepts the challenge, and lops off the Green Knight's head with a single swipe, only to have the Knight stand up, pick up his head, and remind Gawain to meet him at the appointed time. The ensuing quest, culminating in an ambivalent and unexpected ending, weaves together themes of chivalry and the natural, hunting and seduction, as well as Christianity and paganism. The symbolism is many layered and ushers the reader into ever deeper understandings from an ancient era.

But it is the language, the evocative delighting in words, that I most enjoyed. Here is the description of a boar hunt that takes place while Gawain fends off the amorous advances of a beautiful mistress:

"The front men stepped forward to fire a shot,
aimed arrows at him that were often on target,
but their points could not pierce his impenetrable shoulders
and bounced away from his bristly brow.
The smooth slender shafts splintered into pieces,
and the heads glanced away from wherever they hit.
Battered and baited by such bombardment,
in frenzied fury he flies at the men,
hurts them horribly as he hurtles past,
so that many grow timid and retreated a tad.
But the master of the manor gave chase on his mount,
the boldest of the beast-hunters, his bugle blaring,
trumpeting the tally-ho and tearing through the thickets
till the setting sun slipped from the western sky.
So the day was spent in pursuits of this style,
while our lovable young lord had not left his bed,
and, cosseted in costly quilted covers, there he
remained.
The lady, at first light,
did not neglect Gawain,
but went to wake the knight
and to change his mind."

Above All, Readable

I guess in an enterprise like this - creating the nth translation of an ancient classic - distinction of a given effort comes from the balance of readability, poetry, and faithfulness.

This translation hikes the "readability" parameter all the way up. Most book reviewers of this translation use the "can't put it down" cliche, and it's true. No need to discuss further: if you're looking for a heckuva read, even if you're familiar with this work, you need look no further.

As for poetry, Armitage is a distinguished poet, and clearly invested great care in the music, nuance, and language (including, yes, tons of alliteration...in most cases working off a different consonant than the original). The result stands as a work of art, hence my five stars. One can't argue with greatness.

As for faithfulness...I'm no scholar, so don't take this as more than a comment from the peanut gallery. But as I read, I'd often glance over at the Middle English text and feel dismayed to find that more liberty was taken than I'd have preferred. In many cases, the Middle English is fully intelligible and quite affecting, yet Armitage chooses quite different language. On the other hand, his method is proven by the vibrantly engaging result.

My biggest quibble is that the translation contains three or four VERY jarring instances of discordantly modern colloquialisms (without discernible reason, to my eye) that come from out of nowhere. If I'd known I'd be writing this review, I'd have noted them, but never mind; as you read, you can't help but trip on them. Each time, I'd shake my head in disbelief. But, again, they're extremely infrequent.

So if readability and poetic sweep are your preference - and why wouldn't they would be if you're reading for pleasure? - this is definitely a book to own. If you're a Middle English scholar or a knowledgeable veteran of multiple previous Gawain versions, you ought to approach with a forgiving attitude. Armitage takes pains, in the introduction, to claim a minimally invasive approach. But don't all translators say the same?

Just an aside, perhaps naive: issues of spelling seem to constitute a great deal of the original's impenetrability. I'd love to read a truly minimally invasive translation, where spelling is modernized and only crucial obsolete words are individually replaced (alliteration be damned), in order to enjoy an easier undiluted taste of The Poet's voice. I hasten to note that even if such a translation existed, Armitage's work would still sit proudly on my shelf.

New best Gawain translation

I've read a lot of translations of the poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" (I regularly teach it), and I thought that nobody could outdo the standard, quite wonderful version by Marie Borroff (also published by Norton). Well, I've just finished reading Simon Armitage's amazing translation, and I was wrong. Armitage's should be the new standard version used by students and lay readers everywhere. It captures both the energetic alliteration of the original and also its wonderful toggling between formal and colloquial registers. It does a magnificent job of approximating the galloping rhythm of the long verses, but is equally stunning at managing the "bob and wheel" that brings each long verse to comically neat closure (e.g., see Armitage's description of Gawain's emblem, the pentangle -- "[he] bore that badge on both / his shawl and shield alike. / A prince who talked the truth. A notable. A knight," ll.636-39). It takes some poetic chutzpah to fiddle with the Gawain-poet in this way. But Armitage has the versifying courage and the nervy tone just right. I think the 14th-century poet, whoever he was, would admire and appreciate this new version.

That's also because Armitage shows humility as a translator too when it matters. For example, he works hard to preserve the delicate moral ambiguities of the original poem. It's difficult to translate Gawain's refusal to give the seductress, the lady of the manor (where his humility, his loyalty and his self-control are tested) a token of his affection with the perfect blend of courtesy and self-regard that is there in the original ("Hit is not your honour to haf at this tyme / A glove for a garysoun of Gawaynes giftes," ll. 1806-07), but Armitage's "it strikes me as unseemly that you should receive / nothing greater than a glove as a keepsake from Gawain" hits the mark pretty well; by placing Gawain's reference to himself in the third-person at the end of the line, he makes us wonder if the hero isn't buying in a bit too easily to the reputation that has preceded him.

I'm not going to repeat the plot of the whole poem here; it's well known, easy to find online, and other amazon reviewers have gone over it. Armitage's confidence as a translator is expressed in his willingness to provide the original language of the poem on a facing page (Borroff's translation does not do this), so the reader can take a long look at the luscious original. Sure, he changes a word here or there (every translation does this), but Armitage is scrupulously true to the spirit of the original.

Beautiful book, way too much prep

This is an absolutely beautiful cookbook with so much encouragement from Oprah and tons of fun pictures. But… I have to say that for the average working girl, there's just too much involved in making these recipes. You'd have to have a sous chef to get them accomplished. For example, the Thai Green Chicken Curry has 15 ingredients for the curry paste and 15 more (!) for the curry.

I bought this book because it's Oprah's and because I wanted to improve our eating habits, especially with the WW points already assigned. But sadly, I'm going to return it. I just don't have the time or patience to deal with what all's involved with these recipes.

Beautiful book but the average person can't afford all the ingredients needed for a meal. If they have a family I doubt they'd have the time to prepare them. If this weight watchers why are their no serving sizes to go with points. Very disappointed.

Beautiful book, but the recipes are too time consuming for this working mom and many ingredients are hard to find. It will be going back to Amazon.
