White Fang (Dover Thrift Editions), by Jack London

When White Fang was first published in 1906, Jack London was well on his way to becoming one of the most famous, popular, and highly paid writers in the world. White Fang stands out as one of his finest achievements, a spellbinding novel of life in the northern wilds.
In gripping detail, London bares the savage realities of the battle for survival among all species in a harsh, unyielding environment. White Fang is part wolf, part dog, a ferocious and magnificent creature through whose experiences we see and feel essential rhythms and patterns of life in the animal kingdom and among mankind as well.
It is, above all, a novel that keenly observes the extraordinary working of one of nature's greatest gifts to its creatures: the power to adapt. Focusing on this wondrous process, London created in White Fang a classic adventure story as fresh and appealing for today's audiences as for those who made him among the bestselling novelists of his day.

From School Library Journal
Gr 2-4–London's novel portrays the interior life of mistreated part-wolf White Fang while exploring the fundamental nature of wild animals and the brutality inherent in vast Alaskan landscapes and inside men's hearts. It does not seem suitable reading material for primary-grade children, and Lutin's picture-book adaptation does not make an effective argument for the attempt. From the first page, in which White Fang's half-dog mother runs with her mate, One-Eye, Lutin falters; London revels in detailing natural impulses and viciousness, but this adaptation betrays his text with a ludicrous statement about the pair's love for one another. Later pages similarly fail to capture the spirit of London's harsh study of instinct and domestication. Guilloppe's visually arresting illustrations may appeal to some comic-book fans, and several spreads effectively use striking silhouettes to convey menace and action without gruesome detail. But overall, the digital artwork's strong lines and vivid colors feel disappointingly flat, lacking the nuance and delicate power of a natural landscape. While the adaptation glosses over many troubling and violent subplots, like initial owner Gray Beaver's descent into alcoholism and White Fang's repeated beatings and deadly dog fights, Lutin includes two gunshots. Many readers enjoy stories of nature, wilderness, and survival; books by Jean Craighead George, Gary Paulsen, and Roland Smith should more than suffice until they choose to explore Jack London's savage classics unchanged.–Robbin E. Gr. 6-8. Ed Young, whose haunting illustrations of the wolf made his Caldecott- winning Lon Po Po (1989) so memorable, was well chosen as the illustrator for the Scribner Illustrated Classics edition of White Fang. Jack London's 1906 novel. As many will remember, London tells the story of a wolf-dog who endures great cruelty before he comes to know human kindness. The 12 pastel illustrations illuminate the text with their dramatic use of light and dark, sensitively delineated forms, and soft, subtle shades of color. A handsome new edition of a longtime favorite. Carolyn Phelan

Audiobooks are my favorite mode of bringing books that would otherwise be out of the reading range of my inner-city 5th graders. I had a class set of Call of the Wild and purchased the audiobook so that they could read along with the narration. I can also pause the story as it is read, allowing me to explain an unfamiliar context or to ask questions to gauge comprehension.

I am unhappy with the way this audiobook has set its presets. Usually, books on CD are given points in the text that are easy to find as presets - the locations on the CD that allow the listener to advance through the reading to find where they left off. Typically, presets are given at chapter starts and then one or two paragraphs into that chapter. NOT THIS ONE! We listened to a chapter a day and I had to struggle to find the next chapter on the following day. Presets were even WITHIN paragraphs! Very impractical for my purposes (and I imagine anyone else).

Although the narrator paced the book beautifully and read with sufficient emotion to bring the story to life, I will probably not buy another audiobook produced by Blackstone Audio in the future because its obvious to me now that they aren't using the standard method of arranging audio tracks.

Good, Well-Written Story
By chibilee02
I’ll give this to Jack London: he did a great job with the opening scenes of White Fang. I was impressed with his narrative description of the wilderness that the book is set in. The tone set was an ominous and dangerous one, fitting for the setting in which White Fang was born into.

The book is really helped with London’s writing. His writing was very eloquent and poetic, something that you probably wouldn’t expect coming from a book about the life of White Fang. This style aided in the descriptions of the Yukon wilderness and all that inhabit it. It highlighted the beauty, order and danger that exists in nature. And considering that the a lot of the cast is made up of animals (to go along with the humans), London’s writing gave them a sort of human quality to them, with their own personalities and traits that distinguishes them.

Which leads me to the book’s unique trait: giving insight to the thought process and rationale of an animal. I didn’t have any expectation as to the book’s content, but in a way I was still surprised to find out how London narrated the story. I appreciated how, in writing the story from an animal’s perspective, included White Fang’s and the other animals thought process. He wrote how they could possibly see the world which in turn influenced their actions. Through White Fang how nature can be both ordered and chaotic, fair and unfair, and the good and bad aspects of humans. This is not to say London made White Fang very logical in his thinking. He very much left room for instincts that couldn’t be explained and just plain not knowing and having to accept things as they are. It was a good balance of having White Fang be an intelligent being while still giving subtle reminders that he has the blood of the wild wolf and still runs on instincts.

In a sense, this is a coming of age story of an animal that’s part wolf and part dog. White Fang essentially finds love and comfort with a human family after enduring some very harsh and difficult upbringing, both from the wild and in the human world (seriously, if a human was put in place of White Fang with the events in the book tailored to a human character, this would be a story about a horrible childhood leading to a suspicious, closed off adulthood). This was a good book with a well-written story and an engaging main character who embodies the word "survivor".
